Dear students and parents,

I would like to welcome all of you, both new and returning families, to the new school year, our second in operation at the International School of London Qatar. I hope that you have enjoyed your summer holidays and are eagerly looking forward to the start of the new school year. I look forward to meeting many of you in the first few weeks of term.

The 2009 - 2010 school year promises to be a very exciting school year for ISLQ, with a strong emphasis on the consolidation of the planning and curriculum development of 2008 – 2009 and on the continued promotion of excellence across our Primary and Secondary school sections. At ISLQ, we provide a challenging, balanced curriculum based on the International Baccalaureate Primary Years (PYP) and Middle Years programmes (MYP). We set high academic and professional standards for learning and teaching and we are working towards full accreditation to both the International Baccalaureate Organization and the Council of International Schools following the path of our sister school, the International School of London.

We expect to start the school year with almost 400 students from over 40 different nationalities and we will work hard to ensure that all new students have as smooth a transition as possible and soon feel very much a part of our school community. As student enrolment grows, we also welcome many new teachers to the school from different countries and backgrounds. The rich cultural diversity amongst students, parents and teachers allows us the opportunity to become a truly global international school. Drawing on the rich variety of cultures in the school, ISLQ aims to develop students who are globally-minded, seeking to understand and appreciate the attitudes and values of others. We strongly encourage the learning of Mother-tongue languages and offer Mother-tongue languages within the mainstream curriculum from EC2 to Year 10. This encourages our students to develop a strong sense of self-esteem and an understanding of their own culture while developing an appreciation of other cultures.

Teachers and Classroom Assistants have been actively engaged in a comprehensive orientation programme ensuring the school is ready to commence on September 1st, our first day of term and we anticipate that the children will come home excited about their learning in the days and weeks ahead. On September 1st, all students will receive some information about the school year including the 2009 - 2010 School calendar, the parent-student handbook and relevant classroom procedures. Thereafter, we are aiming to send home a weekly update on Wednesdays with the students. Parents are also advised to check our website regularly for information updates.

I wish all of you, students, parents and teachers a stimulating and exciting learning experience in the year ahead.

Warmest regards,

Jan Wood, Principal
